About Kwid
The car that has taken the budget hatchback segment by storm, Renault’s Kwid is a breath of fresh air in this rather utilitarian segment. It comes with a lightweight body, a responsive 799 CC petrol engine and a rather impressive 25.2 kmpl mileage. The Kwid comes with a host of features that are segment firsts, and takes on the Maruti Alto and Hyundai Eon backed by its clever engineering. Priced in the range of Rs. 2.57 lakh - 3.53 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi, the Kwid is excellent value for money.
Alto
The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is the spiritual successor to the legendary Maruti 800. With small proportions and attractive styling combined with an extremely affordable price point, the Alto 800 is one of the highest selling cars in the country. The Alto 800 is available in both petrol and factory fitted CNG versions which make it even more attractive as a cost effective point-to-point city car for most Indian middle class families.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is sleek and stylish with modern styling and compact dimensions all rolled into one. The large headlamps accentuate the front with the large grille tying up the look. The rear too is stylish with a dash of chrome on the boot. The interior is especially attractive and is a big step up from what the original Alto and the original 800 used to be. The smart center console in which the audio system and the AC vents are placed is also a big upgrade over the previous alto’s rather simple architecture.

The Alto 800 comes with a three cylinder 800cc engine. This 800cc engine, somewhat similar to the 800cc engine found in the last generation Alto and the Maruti 800 before that is known to be bulletproof when it comes to reliability, extremely fuel efficient while packing decent performance for a tiny city use car. The Alto 800 comes with a 5-speed gearbox which is mated to a front wheel drive drivetrain. The Alto 800 gets disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the back.
The Alto 800 is one of the most fuel efficient cars in India returning mileage of 22.74kmpl. The Alto 800 goes up against the likes of the Tata Nano and the Hyundai Eon and is priced below Rs 4 lakh. The Alto 800, in our opinion is one of the most value for money cars you can buy especially if you have a small satellite family that does not need a lot of space and your main use is point to point transport in crowded cities like Mumbai.
In terms of future specification, we expect the Alto 800 to soon get the new 2-cylinder diesel engine and also an automatic gearbox which in turn will make it an extremely practical proposition for thousands of individuals who want to buy a car but are vary of the difficulties of driving and of the costs involved with it.
Hyundai eon
Overview
The Hyundai Eon is Hyundai’s entry-level car that was built specifically for the Indian market to combat the ever popular Maruti Suzuki Alto and the Tata Nano. The Hyundai Eon is priced slightly higher than the Alto and the Nano is comes with two petrol engine options, both of which also get factory fitted LPG packages which makes it a very tempting offering for the entry level Indian motorist who is looking for his or her first automobile.
On the exterior front, the eggshell like shape is the only one of its kind in this segment compared to the older looking Maruti Suzuki Alto and the conventional looking Datsun Go. Hyundai’s fluidic design language with large, pulled back headlamps that fuse seamlessly into the body, looks quite appealing combined with the large centrally mounted front grille and the overall cute proportions of the car. The large rear tail lamps compliment the tail gate tying up the Eon’s unique look. Front the side too, the Hyundai Eon actually looks much bigger than it actually is, which for a small car is a very good thing. In fact, the Hyundai Eon is possibly the best looking entry level hatchback in India.

On the interior front, the Hyundai Eon is the most well equipped amongst its competition. The Hyundai Eon gets Bluetooth telephony, a double din infotainment system and a dual tone interior. In fact, the beige and grey interiors with the large and comfortable seats compliments the Eon’s useable proportions well. The front seats, although quite cozy due to its good side support bolsters, lacks good head support. The rear seats though are a little cramped but still offer more space than the likes of the Maruti Alto K10. The boot though, is quite spacious and has enough space for an average sized family’s holiday luggage.
In terms of technical specifications, the Hyundai Eon comes with two engine options. The 800cc engine is a three cylinder motor that offers 55PS of peak power and 75Nm of torque. On the other hand, the 1.0-litre motor is more powerful and offers 68PS of peak power and 94Nm of torque. The 1.0-litre three cylinder engine is very similar to the K10 engine found in the likes of the Alto. The engines offer mileage of 21.1 and 20.3kmpl respectively. The 800cc engine also comes with a factory fitted LPG option. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Hyundai Eon goes up against the Tata Nano, the Maruti Suzuki Alto range, the Datsun Go and the Renault Kwid. The Eon is priced between Rs 3-4.5 lakh.
Tata nano
Overview
The Nano takes on the likes of the Maruti Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon. The Nano is a cute little city car with a unibody design. The front end houses a small boot and two diamond shaped headlights, a slab sided profile and signature Tata hatchback rear end with tall taillights. Ground clearance is excellent at 180mm.
The Nano is just 3.1 metres long and has the wheels extended at all corners resulting in a 2.23m wheelbase. This opens up a sizeable interior which is larger than what you get in an Alto. Plastics quality is passable and the seats are fairly comfortable. The rear seats are placed over the rear mounted engine and can get a bit uncomfortable at high speeds. The Nano is a simple design made to deliver on the value you get for your money and that means cost saving is evident on various fronts. The lack of cubby holes or the shortage of features are ways to save costs but owners will not mind that considering the running costs of the Nano are considerably lower than competition.
The Nano is powered by a rear mounted 624cc two-cylinder diesel engine offering acceptable levels of performance for a car this size with these specifications. It develops 38PS of power and 51Nm of torque. It is mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox sending power to the rear wheels. Since the Nano weighs just 600kg, the small capacity engine provides adequate power for city runs. On the highway though, the Nano runs out of steam at 100-105kmph. The Nano returns impressive ARAI certified mileage of 25.4kmpl which is the highest for a petrol car. The Nano does not offer any safety aids like ABS and Airbags.
The Nano as a City runabout makes a lot of sense. It is light, nimble and easy to park with the power steering variants. It is also very cheap to buy which works for first time car buyers.
But choose the car of your choice don't go on opinions
